Why go Vegetarian? Give truth a chance.

"There is no god higher than truth."
~Mahatma Gandhi

People are constantly asking me why I want to go Vegan, or even why I'm a Vegatarian, so I've decided to make this post to expose the reader to great resources, and then to express my views. I'm not trying to persuade you or convince you to change your lifestyle in any way. I simply want to expose you the truth behind the decisions we make in to society, and to encourage you to make your own conclusions and decisions. Don't just listen to me blindly- do your own research and discover things for yourself. You can live your life ignorant of the truth, or face it directly and support what you believe in. The choice is yours.

Before I begin I encourage you to view resources to learn about Vegetarianism and its benefits. The knowledge is out there, and I don't want to have to paraphrase every single point. You can start with these Resources:
  1. Watch the documentary "Earthlings".
    • Click here to watch it on Google Video
Go ahead. Take the red pill. This gives the viewer a chance to actually see and understand the effects using animals has on our planet, morality, and health. Take 90 minutes to watch it and judge for yourself. It's easy to say that you understand what happens in factory farms, but seeing for yourself and realizing it is completely different. You really shouldn't create an argument unless you've seen this.
  2. Another step is to analyze the validity of myths against Vegetarianism, and to understand the benefits of adopting a new vegetarian diet. Here are some resources I found real quick:
Like I said earlier, do your own research and find truth for yourself. I'll now begin with my views on vegetarianism.

Societal Programming

We, as members of society, have been exposed to societal norms since we were born. Society influences our beliefs, desires, and even our thoughts. What society says acceptable, is seemingly morally acceptable by most individuals. Just over 150 years ago, citizens in America were born into a world where racism and slavery were completely acceptable. But "in the midst of untruth, truth persists." Our American culture evolved over the years to set higher moral standards than previously before, always beginning with a small strong group of individuals who weren't afraid to stand out and defend what they believe is right. The cultural evolution of morality continues to this day, but ignorance amongst society is still very high. Ignorance is what shields us from the truth. Only when the shield of ignorance is down can one truly make a personal decision.

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it."
~Hellen Keller

Most of us, including myself, were raised eating meat before we could even think. It's ingrained into our lifestyle, thoughts, and desires. When I was about 6 years old I remember asking my Dad where meat comes from. He told me it came from a bull, and I remember being very puzzled. It took me a while to find the real answer.

Only by slowly attempting to undo the negative societal programming that has slowly constructed our thoughts today, can we begin to have an original thought and see things as they truly are. Undoing this programming can be as simple as questioning things that we may not normally question. Think for yourself, and watch your mind for any opinions that may arise.

If the historical trend of increasing morality continues, perhaps vegetarianism will one day be the new societal norm.

Hypocrisy and inconsistency

When I studied at BCIT I witnessed an act that really got my thoughts on vegetarianism going. A wounded bird landed inside one of the main buildings, and a group of girls crowded around the bird, feeling sorry for it and trying to help it. If only they saw what happened to their chicken dinner. Many people claim to be "animal lovers" yet they still continue to torture animals by eating meat. Is it morally different to hire an assassin to kill someone, than to kill someone yourself? Through their actions of eating meat, they are "hiring assassins" to torture animals and encourage the development of factory farming, among many other things.

It still amazes and shocks me to this day how people will go out of their way to bring their precious dog to a "doggie spa", and give it unusual luxuries, yet support the torture of animals by eating copious amounts of meat.

Every thing we purchase like a vote towards what it represents. Every vote counts. The least we can do is to be the change we want to see in this world.

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.”
~ Paul McCartney

But it tastes good..

Another story about my younger days. I was barely old enough to remember; probably about 6 years old. I was brought to a French restaurant by my parents. They served me this one dish and I really loved it- I even ordered a second round! It was only until after that they told me what I was eating was escargot - cooked snails. My appetite and desire for this food instantly disappeared when I realized what I was truly eating.

I ate a lot of meat during my adolescence. I even ate as least 3 meat sources per day when I begin weightlifting. I loved my steak medium rare; not too cooked or I'd send it back. I can empathize with many about being attached to the taste of meat. But like my loss of appetite for escargot , I lost all of my appetite for meat upon learning the truth. Once I knew what meat was doing to my health, its effect on earth, and the unnatural torture it causes upon sentient beings, my desire for meat reduced. The pleasure I used to get from eating meat was pure delusion. I gained pleasure purely from sense pleasure, too blind to understand what I was doing. Many people still think that I am suppressing my desire to eat meat. I do not desire meat anymore whatsoever. You can lose your desire, too.

There are lots of amazing vegetarian meals, they just aren't so popular in our culture and society. You'd be surprised how much better a vegetarian dish can taste than a meat dish, and how much better it is for your health. Some cultures like to eat escargot, some like monkey brains. Food selection is largely based on culture and societal acceptance. Most North Americans would think that monkey brains is disgusting in the same way another culture may find all meat to be disgusting. Expand your mind, and try let go of your attachments.

Every little effort counts
You don't have to jump into vegetarianism right away. You don't have to do anything you don't believe in, actually. But every little effort you make counts. If everyone just simply reduced their meat by 25%, that's a huge hit on the meat industry. If it even exists, buy meat that doesn't occur on factory farms if you have to eat meat. The more your learn about vegetarian, the lower your desire will be.

Peace
If we every want to have a shot at world peace, we have to stop the consumption of meat. It is the first step towards a non-violent world.

“And with such a vegetarian diet they may be expected to live in peace and health to a good old age, and bequeath a similar life to their children after them.”
-Socrates

Conslusion
Thank you so much for reading! I hope I didn't come off belief-imposing, or snobbish in any way. I'm in no way perfect. I'm just doing my best to learn as much as I can, and do my part in creating the world I want to see. I truly just want to expose you to my thoughts; its what many people ask for, anyways. I'm just delivering. I'm only asking you to take the time to consider the benefits of vegetarianism, watch footage and learn the truth of using animals, and decide for yourself. Give Vegetarianism a chance!

the sander glaives

situation is turnaround
visualization is robotic
wheels of items
eggs, life forms, breath

rumblings stones of colours
red clouds of sparse purple
lost in the wings of red maradium statues
every sense cell in the human skin and state is finely attuned to a direction
uniformly absorbing the senses of fear and illusion

the illusion that appears when fading from freedom and presence
the illusion of time and future
of happiness and sorrow

In the distance I see someone dressed in thin frame build with plastic. As he walked away, each section would bend and visually distort.
Sinking into a stream of ethreal water wave mass
Covering every nerve surrounding the body
In a cold enveloping splash
After each step
It continues until

It is everywhere, and invisible.

Danger and Love
The constant companions of each drop of breath
Each drop that goes unwilled
or un-imposed.

Tiny Organic Satelites

them
faces of times past
faces of the present

spoken and never seen
seen and never spoken

tiny organic satellites
of flesh and bone

pushed apart
yet drawn together
by an invisible thread

binding them
orbiting them

around invisible drugs

wind shapes a desert
smooth, deceptively beautiful
without touch

like the faceless faces
that blow away
like grains of sand
moved by an unseen force

lost and rarely noticed

floating beside one another
but never joining

their threads are not seen
but are unconsciously bound
by the seek for personal gain

cut from the same cloth
but folded and mended uniquely

perceptual distortions only blind
the beauty of humanity

perceptual distortions only stop
the love you give
the love you get

Routine; is the flow with you or against you?

This article may seem obvious to some people, especially women. But this is for myself. :-) I find that writing something and talking about it others makes me strive to be more congruent with myself. If I tell people about this stuff and I don’t actually follow it…. (It’s not going to happen, but you can see the influence it has on my congruency)

Routine can be a great tool, or it can make you a tool.

The bad routine:

The same every day tasks and activities that make life seem like a time portal more than a journey. So many people get caught into the trap of work, then retreating home to escapism: television and over-indulgence to name a few. They get up in the morning just to get by; not to strive for dreams. Before they know it, 30 years has gone by and no dreams or goals are ever achieved.

I’ll always make an effort to change my life, try new things, and never fall into an unproductive cycle. The bad routine makes goal hunting seem like a hope or goal itself.

The good routine:

Finding out what your goals are and integrating them into your daily lifestyle.

For example: I want to constantly learn something new every day, gain the best effects of meditation, build and maintain a fit body, and learn French.

My Morning routine: (Assuming I have enough time. If I don’t, I will finish the routine when I get home or reduce the amount of time in each activity)

  • Meditate 30 minutes
  • Read 30 minutes (Also done before bed)
  • Do light exercises (pushups, etc) for about 5 minutes to get blood flowing
  • Drink Matcha (Important… :-P)
  • Jump around, dance, listen to music, etc before I leave the house to get into state =D

Later in the day I could practice French and other tasks for as little at 10 minutes and still gain benefit if it is maintained every day.

Other Routines: Not always daily.

  • Write one article per week
  • Weight training 3+ times per week
    • 20 minute power cardio after each event
  • Lots more… I’m not posting my whole damn list.

Thanks to a female friend of mine, I decided to use a checklist. I found this iPhone app, “ToDo” that does the job quite nicely. It’s so satisfying to check off the list!

Summary

Without a solid schedule of routines, I find myself slipping into the void of procrastination and being unproductive. Small allocations of time in a given activity still prove beneficial if maintained as a daily routine. This maximizes the attention span of the human mind.

Transfer your long and short term goals into tasks that you can do every day. Never lose sight of your goals. Use your goals and aspirations as fuel to wake up in the morning and live life with passion.

Use routines to your advantage, or be sucked into the circle of dissatisfaction.

Remember: I’m not emotionally attached from my opinions. I want you to argue with me. I learn from arguing. Let me know if I’m ignorant, speak your mind!

Inner peace, world peace, and you.

Inner peace, world peace, and you

“When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world. ~Author Unknown “

Glimpses of truth would periodically flash inside my mind during my first 6 hour meditation retreat on Saturday. Every time I'd exhale it felt as if tense mental knots in my mind are being loosened and straightened out. It's a feeling so difficult to put into words. It's like if I was to describe what a banana tastes like to someone who's never tried it before. It is something that has to be experienced for one's self. I sometimes thought of meditation as a selfish act. I thought that the only purpose of meditation was to help my mind, but I now realize that it is so much more than that. Achieving inner peace with a clear and open mind is not only beneficial to one's self, but to society as well.

Every interaction with a peaceful mind can transfer knowledge, happiness, and wisdom. Emotions are contagious, and spreading joy and happiness is a great contribution to society. I've learned that everyone in the world is essentially made out of the same dough. Our mind labels people differently based on their life experiences and sets of beliefs. Everyone is ignorant in their own way, and this ignorance and lack of an open mind is what causes so much conflict in the world. Understanding that one's is ignorant in some ways is a bold step to create peace amongst society. I'd like to think that I have a general love for everyone in the world, despite any differences and life experiences that causes my mind to label them differently. People don't always choose how they want things to happen. The fact that I am writing this article write now is based on my genetic code and life experiences in the same way that a murderer can justify killing someone. We didn't choose our selves.

All anger comes from within. Nobody can make me angry, but someone can sure cause me to generate anger from within myself. When confronted with anger and hatred towards me, I am now trying to understand what got someone to that position. If someone has hatred towards me, they essentially had no choice. Instead of encouraging negative behaviour, I am trying to use soothing words to replace those of anger and hatred. I see hatred as just another guise of ignorance. If I could always conduct myself in a loving manner for others, my shroud of ignorance would fade and the world would be a better place to live in.

I discovered that being immersed in the present moment is a key part of success and happiness, and it is something that many forget to do.

“I cannot wait to finish school so I can work. I cannot wait to buy my first house. I cannot wait to get married. I cannot wait to retire. I cannot wait to... die?”

Enjoy your current position in life, as well as each breath in every moment.

My mind always seems to be wandering in some direction at any given time. This wandering of the mind makes the task in front of me seem fade to gray and become insignificant. Many people worry for the future too much, causing them to never truly live there life the way it is currently. The past or the future exist only within the mind. If the mind is empty, the only thing existing is the present moment. Meditation is essentially practicing the ability to focus on one thing. It therefore silences the mind and makes it empty.

The more I meditate the more I realize how much I need to do it. I catch my mind wandering more often than I used to now that I know to look for it. Practicing meditation helps me maintain my focus in the moment and it brings out colour in a sometimes gray reality.

The teachings of Zen Buddhism are seemingly infinite, and they are a constant learning experience for me. My knowledge on the topic is still very shallow, and it is only truly internalized and understood when discovered within. So if you are curious, discover it for yourself. Learn to practice meditation for inner peace, and for the peace of others. Be the change that you want to see in the world.

Quick poem draft; every breath

Every breath
Balanced and synchronous with a mind that is empty
Not too deep never too shallow
An empty mind that soaks the now like a sponge
Brightening colours and warming the heart
Unbound by our psychological timeline

Inhaling truth and exhaling tension
I smile not for what future could bring
Or for the past that I have learned from
I smile for the path I am passively creating
And the life I am exploring
This very moment

A rush of joy flows through my body
With attachment to seemingly nothing

I am alive
I am being

Amazing sexy action colourful post!

Great. Now I have your attention! The attention span of the average citizen is declining at a steadily decreasing rate. This is what causes the media machine to be even more selective on the type of stimulus that they display to their target audience. Sometimes the decision to attraction a short attention span results in lies.

I, however, do not lie. You will get what your attention span craves. Then I can start writing.

Amazing.

Sexy.

ACTION.

Colourful.

INTRODUCTION

I've always loved the concept of brevity. Now is my chance to put this concept to use.
This is what I plan to write about in my blog:

  • Articles. Especially ones that call out the delusions of so many people and potentially offend them.
  • My ideas and philosophies. Straight and to-the-point.
  • Other ideas and philosophies that I find useful and beneficial
  • Creative poems and stories
  • My random adventures
  • My personality. For the entire world to view.
Why do I want to start writing?

  • Writing helps consolidate and understand one's own thoughts more clearly
  • I don't have to repeat the same things over and over. I'll just tell people to check my blog. I've said that jokingly before. Now it will be true.
  • To spread my message of peace an happiness throughout the globe. One visitor at a time.
  • It gives people a chance to enter the deeper creative depths of my mind
Who the @#$! is Hector?

In grade 7, I noticed that there were always a few ASIAN Kevins in each class. I felt that my name had become detached from my identity. My solution? Change my name. During French class I noticed a drawing of a cliche chef in white with his white chef hat. He was saying some common French phrase like, "Je m'appelle Hector". Jokingly, I said that my new name was Hector, because I wanted to be a hardcore chef like him. It stayed for a while.

Later on in life, I used Hector to define my alternate hardcore personality. This was further solidified when I was playing Super Mario Bros on my friend's Nintendo DS. I got a special mushroom and Mario grew really big, destroying everything in his path."Hey James, I'm going HECTORMODE!"

Hectormode was born. Now you can somewhat understand. Everyone asks me this, so now I can just send them here.

This post is cut short. It's New Years Eve. I'm heading out to party. I'll be posting again soon!
